Have an all-inclusive reception for every guest invited to it. In other words, don't do a tiered guest list where the primary guests are to attend the full reception while secondary ones you'd like to invite but can't afford, are only to come to the last portion of the party where the meal is over and the open bar has now become a cash one. Can't afford to host each and every person? Then scale down in other areas (ie., cheaper entrees, some diy decor, etc.) but do not rub it in people's faces on how little they count by tacking them onto the tail end of your party. It's mean and one can look a bit greedy when it comes to what's expected of gifts.

I help run a wedding event facility and agree with the comments about the wait and the food! Also there are a number of other ideas on how to save money on alcohol that I recently published in Ezinearticles. You can find it by searching for "Affordable Alcohol at Weddings"
